Winter warming

by Carlisle Homes

Baby it’s cold outside….
Yes winter is upon us, summer is in fact not endless and it now seems such a long long time ago. Avoid getting lost in the winter blues and start thinking about warming up with a new seasonal look. Discovering your winter warmer style doesn’t have to mean re-inventing everything, just a few simple ideas to create your own cosy haven at home.

1.  De-clutter
You’re about to spend a whole lot more time indoors for the next few months, so don’t leave your home cleansing until spring. Be brutal with your rooms now to create a fresh clean palette to build on for your winter style. De-cluttering doesn’t have to mean throwing everything out, think more about putting things back in their right spots and finding new ways to store and organise your stuff. (We’ve found a good read about the basics of de-cluttering, read more)

2.  Layers
Put on your home’s winter coat with lovely throws draped across sofas and beds that just cry out ‘come snuggle with a cup of hot choc, woolly socks and your book club’s latest project…’. Don’t be afraid to mix and match textures and materials, like knitted pieces and faux furs. The key in your shopping is to find the perfect throw that gives your room a warming style but is also comfortable to use and snuggle into. We love the chunky throw in the Arlington on display at Warralily, Armstrong Creek. And the luxury of the master suite in the Barwon at Williams Landing Estate.

3.  Cosy spaces
Think outside just the traditional living spaces and look for options to create some additional cosy nooks, such as an oversized armchair and lamp in the study for your own reading corner. Or perhaps you have a window that is a lovely spot to enjoy the winter sun, where you can create another space to chill out.

4.  Lighting
Create a cosy warm glow on winter evenings with a focus on mood lighting, think lamps and candles, to make you forget the chilly conditions outside! When stocking up your candle supplies you can’t beat the many options available at Ikea, lots of ideas!

5.  Colour
In the midst of warming up your rooms don’t forget to use some pops of colour to break up the wintry tones. Some reminders of summer will get us through the dark days, think a scattering of bright cushions among the throws, or a trio of knick-knacks in a bright colour to create an interesting focal point.

6.  Pyjama days
We all need a lazy day in winter where we sleep ‘til we’re hungry and eat ‘til we’re sleepy. If you only choose to do a winter makeover on one room, then the master suite is the perfect styling candidate. Think flannel sheets, layered quilts and throws and a cosy rug to warm our toes ‘if’ we venture out from under the doona! (Some great info to check out at Adairs – Getting your bedroom winter ready!
