Studies and nooks

by Carlisle Homes

If you’re new to the home buying journey you probably aren’t up with the latest lingo and wondering what on earth is a ‘nook’? The latest buzz in design is whether the traditional full room study will suffer the same slow death as the formal dining areas of yester year? Enter the study nook! As our consumption of technology overtakes our lives and the line between ‘computer-time’ and general life becomes blurred, we are seeing more of an interest in the inclusion of less formal study areas. These new spaces are called nooks and are typically a corner area or a recessed zone within a room. The reason nooks have become so popular is that they still provide a dedicated work space but are in the mix of family life, that is people can still talk to each other, what a novel idea!

However, having a nook doesn’t mean you don’t have to keep your study, your new home may have both! Flexible living zones that can adapt to your family are the key to finding the right design for you!

Danielle Taylor gives us the run down on creating the right style for your study and nook for the perfect work stations or homework area.

Nook style…

To create some separation from the larger room, it’s a good idea to consider using a feature wall to define the nook and give it its own identity. Wallpaper or textured paint can create visual interest, but blackboard or magnetic paint has some practical appeal as well.

As nook areas are often part of larger spaces such as activity or rumpus rooms, it is important to include storage options to ensure the work space can be kept clear and tidy. Nooks are not an area to become a ‘to be filed’ dumping ground! Floating shelves and cupboards work well to address the practicality of providing storage space while not intruding on the room with additional heavy furniture pieces.

Nooks really do need their own light source to create a functional workspace area. Separate lighting is also a bonus if a family member wants to do some work while the others watch a movie with dimmed lighting. Put some thought into the location of power points in your nook space to ensure adequate facility for multiple technology such as laptops and phones. Ask our Spectra team about our new Saturn Zen USB charger/smart shelf for an ingenuous solution to avoid the endless hunt for charger adaptors.

Our favourite nook…

We can’t talk about study nooks without mentioning the very clever Marlow at the Trillium Estate, Mickleham! This nook is the epitome of making use of space! Cleverly tucked away but within easy access of the bedroom zone, this nook is the perfect space for the budding fashion designer. You can have your own sewing space tucked away from the hustle bustle of the main areas of the home, who knew? The Marlow nook screams independence with a striking black and white colour scheme, functional and stylish lighting and impactful feature wall artwork. It’s a must to check out on your ‘nook’ journey…

Not leaving the old traditional study out of the party, we explore our top 6 from our display homes. Interesting wallpaper designs or textured feature walls are perfect for the dedicated study zone, giving this space its own personality and visual appeal for the hard working office worker! Oversized mirrors reflecting the light and bringing the outside in, fill study areas with inspiration and ensures its occupant doesn’t feel locked away in the dark.

For the book lover looking for the ideal space for their beloved collection, consider setting your study up as your own library. Custom made floor to ceiling shelving or stand-alone units both work well, adding practicality to this room.

Artwork in your study is a must! Giving you something to stare endlessly at while you work away on that important assignment (i.e. online shopping). Large photo canvasses are the perfect welcome for visitors to your home for studies located at the front of the home.

Our favourite study

And our all time favourite study from our display homes has to be the Hamptons inspired Vaucluse. Picture yourself sitting in this classic study area scribing romantic love letters to your beau, while the summer breeze rustles the silk sheer curtains, the clock tick tocks in the background….and then you wake up to realise you have dribbled on your weekly shopping list.
