Stuck on wallpaper!

by Carlisle Homes

Wallpaper is very en vogue in home decorating right now, but then again did it ever go out of fashion? What has definitely changed is the way we are installing it, it is now more popular to engage expert installers rather than wrestling with pattern matching and long lengths of paper with a mind of its own. However, for the diehard DIYer there are a multitude of ‘how to’ instructional videos to refer to on YouTube. Interior Design Manager, Danielle Taylor, shares her favourite ‘papered’ rooms and some top secret tips on where to source your wall art from!

Trying to decide on the perfect wallpaper for a room or for a theme throughout your home can seem like a daunting task! A good place to start is to decide whether you plan to use the wallpaper as a feature, therefore maybe choosing bold and eye catching designs, or whether it will be more of a backdrop subtly complimenting other theme items in the space.

Striking wallpapers as seen above in the activity room of the Sanctuary at the Somerfield Estate at Keysborough, catch the eye, make a statement and create a focal point for a space.

Renovation and home makeover shows have contributed to the trend of using custom made wallpapers, generally as a one wall feature. Some suppliers can even digitally print family photos or holiday snaps onto wallpapers, like pickawall.com.au, as used on the popular TV show 'House Rules'. Custom wallpapers can be used throughout many areas in the home but do work best in kids’ rooms and play areas but can also create a statement feature in less frequently used rooms such as dining areas and studies.

Custom-style prints used on multiple walls in one of the bedrooms of the Montpellier at Selandra Rise Estate, Clyde North create a memorable statement and discussion point!

Danielle sources wallpapers from all over the world through fabric houses and wallpaper suppliers such as:

Casamance Wallpapers
Eurowalls
Ascraft
Seneca Textiles
Paper Scissors Glue
Designers Guild
Harlequin
Osborne and Little

When planning on papering multiple walls within a space, an option is to go for a subtle colour with a textural element to create an interesting layer without overpowering the style theme.

In the Indiana at the Somerfield Estate, Keysborough, Danielle has used a light grey textured wallpaper throughout the family, dining and rumpus room. This feature delicately ties the style theme together creating a subtle visual flow through the open planned space.

Grass and basket weave wallpaper designs can create a unique natural look with a three dimensional aspect providing warmth to a room whilst co-ordinating beautifully with other textures and patterns.

Wall decals and stickers have also emerged as a popular choice to add interest to a room without the permanency of installing wallpaper or the damage involved in hanging picture frames. Reusable decals can create unique looks for kids’ rooms and can be easily updated as your little one grows. Inspirational quotes and poems can add a nice touch to a room and, when applied correctly, actually look they are professionally painted straight onto the wall. We love this website, as seen in Vogue and featuring in Nina’s nursery on the popular TV show Offspring, for some great sticker designs, The Wall Sticker Company.
