Live A Luxurious Hamptons Life

by Carlisle Homes

Elegant coastal styling never dates – here’s five ways to add Hamptons flair to your own home.

Open, airy spaces, touchable textures and soft coastal colours – the Hamptons look brings a special type of magic to interiors, which goes a long way to explaining its enduring appeal. “It’s timeless and elegant, and sets a relaxed tone that works beautifully in Australian homes,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux® Colour and Communications Manager. “The Hamptons look is based on a soothing palette of usually one colour on walls and white on the ceiling, trims, windows and doors. Popular colours for creating this look include greys, greiges, tans, soft blues and greens.”

A Hamptons Coastal interior theme was the basis of the airy interior at the Sorrento Grand Retreat.

There are several iterations of the Hamptons aesthetic and the one you choose will depend on the mood and feel you want to create in your home. Two of the most popular are:

Hamptons Coastal

This look is all about ‘barefoot luxury’: a layered palette of soft, coastal-inspired colours and natural textures that speaks of long days on the sand and a laid-back, indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

The spacious master bedroom at the Sorrento Grand Retreat draws its influence from the luxurious coastal style of the Hamptons.

At Carlisle Homes, our interior designers have captured this look with the stunning Hamptons Coastal Interior Palette, using finishes and materials from leading Australian brands. Spaces are bright and welcoming, with a focus on white-washed walls and cabinetry, and a carefully edited selection of materials that draw nature into your home; think Dulux White on White ™ on walls, soft-coloured Caesarstone benchtops, warm chevron-patterned timber floors, pale patterned tiles and luxurious cut-pile carpet.

Hamptons Elegance

Give your Hamptons look a sophisticated twist with rich, coastal-inspired tones, eye-catching patterns and lashings of touch-me textures. This aesthetic is ideal if you love the Hamptons style, but your home is located in a suburban or urban area.

Soft grey tones, whitewashed furniture and coastal inspired artwork bring the Hamptons look to life in the Matisse.

To take the hassle out of choosing colours and finishes to create this look, our interior designers have produced the Hamptons Elegance Interior Palette using colours and materials from market-leading Australian firms. The focus is on timeless elegance and premium materials that evoke thoughts of Cape Cod holidays peppered with a touch of French Provincial flair. This palette features extra-wide timber flooring, warm limestone-look wall tiles, mid-grey cabinetry, soft grey walls, luxurious Caesarstone benchtops and chunky wool carpet,

Whichever version of the Hamptons look you choose for your home, there are several common elements you’ll want to include.

1. Coastal colours

Look to the gently weathered tones of the beach and coastline for your colour cues, such as soft sand, grey, greige, pale blue and green…and of course, plenty of white! If you prefer stronger contrasts, add in touches of navy or black to your scheme through fabric, artworks and accessories.

To create a Hamptons interior using Dulux colours, Lucena-Orr recommends a soft warm grey such as Dulux Tranquil Retreat on walls and a crisp white trim such as Dulux Lexicon Half on windows, ceilings, doors, architraves and picture rails.

Tactile woollen carpets combined with bright and airy sheer curtains and plants create a tranquil interior in the Matisse.

2. Natural textures

Tactile natural textures are essential to the Hamptons look. Opt for comfortable, linen-upholstered sofas, rattan and timber furniture, hemp rugs and chunky woollen carpet. Introduce luxurious touches of natural stone with limestone-look tiles and a marble-topped coffee or side table. Finish off with an abundance of indoor plants – on tabletops, on stands in the corner of the room and trailing from shelves.

Vintage mirrors and chrome lighting add an elegant touch to the lounge in the Sorrento Grand Retreat.

3. Patterned paper

East-coast style calls for subtly patterned wallpaper in soft tonal colours. Feature walls of plaid inspired checks and geometric shapes will create an appealing contrast against grey-painted walls.

4. Lashings of light and greenery

Maximise light in your Hamptons scheme by opting for linen sheers or white plantation shutters at the windows. If light is in short supply in your home, strategically placed mirrors can help you make the most of what you’ve got and bounce light around.

A winning combination of rustic tiles and shaker inspired joinery elevates the bathrooms in the Matisse.

5. Shaker cabinetry

Classic Shaker-style cabinetry works a treat with the Hamptons look. Use it on kitchen and bathroom cabinetry to inject a fuss-free, classic-meets-contemporary feel into the spaces. For a simple finish, pair it with white-painted timber knobs. Or, for a more elegant, tailored feel, opt for black or brass metal handles.
