DIY Kids’ Rooms

Decorating a kids’ room is no longer child’s play, as DIY options have opened up a labyrinth of forums, tips and ‘how-to’ ideas that will help you create a unique look in your child’s bedroom.

It’s important to keep your project in line with your creative capability and sanity! It’s no use recreating an elaborate setting like the “Orient Express racing through the Matterhorn” in the middle of your child’s playing space if they hate trains! Remember it’s about the kids not your lost childhood! Perhaps a discussion before you decide to DIY is important to get the kids involved in your inspiration, while remaining true to your homes’s contemporary and elegant style. Start small with a piece that will give your child’s room the original wow factor you envisage, and style around it. Ikea and Target are fantastic innovators for inexpensive and functional DIY options. We have found 4 easy ideas that will get your creative juices flowing.

Adventure Time

Neutral timber tones, animal themed pillows, cork boards and practical desk top pieces, will inspire you to DIY adventurously. A rustic pencil holder (with drilled holes) to keep pencils in place, or a quirky ceramic rabbit adorning a chunky (pastel hued) slab of wood, may be a great starting point for your adventure-time DIY bedroom. Idiosyncratic but simple ideas with colour pop, are a fabulous way to add real eye-candy to your child’s room.

Feature walls are a great way of creating a unique space within the bedroom. It adds eccentric character and can even be personalised with a name or a word. Additional eclectic pieces can be added to the room over time to give it an edgy, yet sophisticated look.

2016 is all about the palette with strong colour blocks like purple, green and orange on trend right now (read more about colour in our blog 2016 Colour Outlook). But be mindful of how quickly these trends disappear, so go lightly and perhaps begin with bright bed covers and pillows, a piece of funky furniture that won’t date too quickly, and then tackle the feature wall.
