Create Your Oasis with a Luxurious Master Bedroom and Ensuite
How to Create a Luxurious retreat in your Bedroom & Ensuite
Your bedroom and ensuite should be your private sanctuary – an oasis to escape to and enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation. Fortunately, it’s not hard to achieve. Here, our expert interior designers share easy and practical styling tips for creating the ultimate, peaceful retreat.
Create a focal point
Start by creating a strong focal point such as a feature wall with your favourite piece of artwork. Be mindful of size when you’re selecting a piece; ensure that it is big enough to draw the eye and won’t get lost in the space, such as this arresting contemporary artwork from Tres Art.
Carve out a seating corner
Create a comfortable spot to sit and read, while adding a sculptural element to the room, with a curvy armchair in a textural fabric such as this faux-shearling design by Sarah Ellison. Position it in a corner of the room where it’s away from the bed and won’t encroach on your rest space.
Make the area inviting with a stool or side table where you can pop a book or journal. Add a cosy touch with a rug underfoot like this sumptuous shag pile from Tsar. Introduce mood lighting with this matt black Modernist floor lamp from Domo.
Lay the bed with sumptuous bedding
The bed is the centrepiece of your bedroom retreat, so you’ll want it to look and feel inviting. Create a luxurious effect by layering bedding in varying patterns and textures, and inject a dynamic pop of colour using different shaped accessories. We achieved this look using crisp cotton and french linen bedding, a Mongolian sheepskin cushion (this one was chosen from Adairs) and a textured throw.
Choose colours that promote rest and relaxation, such as cool tones of blue, green and lilac paired with moodier colours such as charcoal and soft grey. To add movement and contrast to the scheme, seek out bedlinen with vertical or horizontal lines such as this linen set by Cultiver.
And don’t forget the layers you can’t see that contribute to the perfect night’s sleep, such as a plush mattress topper and pillows.
Introduce touches of nature
Botanical and floral prints draw nature inside your home and create a wonderful sense of calm. Scatter cushions are one of the easiest ways to achieve this; simply add one or two cushions with a painterly botanical print to brighten your bedding arrangement, such as this Jura Forest design from Adairs. Complete the look with fresh flowers, such as these exotic blooms from Clover. We suggest introducing lilies or Australian Natives to help soften the space.
Style your bedside table
For your bedside accessories, look to incorporate accent patterns and motifs drawn from the design of your bedlinen or artwork, such as this black-and-ivory picture frame from Husk and ribbed-glass vase from Zanui. Both pieces echo the lines on the bedlinen, whilst introducing new textures and materials to the composition. This helps to inject personality into the space.
Create a sense of connection
Carry your bedroom colour scheme through to the ensuite for a smooth sense of flow between the two. Here, soft-grey herringbone wall tiles, dark textured cabinetry and a marble-look benchtop in the ensuite echo the colours and patterns in the bedroom and make the two zones feel like one cohesive space.
Soften hard lines
Using towels like art is a clever way to add colour, pattern and interest to your ensuite. Plush, patterned towels such as these gorgeous ones from Missoni at Top3 By Design will also help soften the hard lines in the space. Alleviate them further using a curvy, functional side table such as this Wittmann Leather Side Table from Domo.
Pile spare folded, patterned towels on the open shelves of your vanity alongside one or two tactile accessories for an instant injection of warmth and character.
Add luxe touches to your benchtop
Create the relaxing feel of a day spa by styling your vanity benchtop with crystals, flowers and organic bathing products.
To keep the space organised, incorporate a drop tray or two for your favourite cosmetics and jewellery. Choose colours drawn from the room’s palette for a cohesive feel, such as this beautiful slate resin tray from Husk and grooved marble trivet from Muuto.
Engage your senses by choosing a candle, soap and room fragrance from the same range. Then dim the lights, lie back in the tub and let the stresses of the day wash away.
