5 Ideas on How to Add Texture to Your Home

The importance of texture within a space, is as essential to design, as flavour is to food.

Texture is often defined as, “the sensations caused by the external surface of objects received through the sense of touch.” Basically, how something feels. Think about your hand running along a rough wooden tabletop, your toes crushing into shag-pile carpet, or your body sinking into a leather couch. Although texture within interior design is also a perceived sensation (especially in magazines) it plays a vital role within the function of a space. It’s no use carpeting your ceiling to add texture to your room is it!

Rug-about

The intensity of light and reflection in any room depends on your choice of flooring. Wooden floors reflect more light than carpet does, so to add extra dimension to a room, use a neutral rug to enhance warmth within the space.

Surface-Up

The surface of a coffee table for example, whether smooth or rough, does not change the function of a room, but helps determine the “feel” of it. Rough and smooth surfaces work well together but never in close proximity. Paired with a granite mantel and a combination of sofas, help to create a warm luxurious, rustic environment. Adding contrast in interior design helps create a look and feel that is easy to execute.
