Time to switch our creative brains to the rumpus/activity area in your new home! This space does need a bit of planning and thought because it really could be the multi-tasker of your new home! Danielle Taylor, Carlisle Interior Design Manager shares some mini tips to get your imagination flowing!
Kids’ zone
If you plan on dedicating this room to the youngest members of the family, the key is to have a lot of storage to easily stash away the toys for a quick clean up. A trip to the Children’s zone at Ikea will provide some great inspiration, you can’t beat the Ikea Trofast series, perfect to separate toys into an easy-to-find order.
Make this space a really fun room for kids with bursts of bright colour with oversized bean bags or cushions. These great affordable ottomans available through Kmart can be used as side tables or another sitting option, and no kids’ zone is complete without a few signature bean bags from Cocoon Couture! A bookcase is essential in this zone, create a mini library corner or fill some of the spaces with more baskets for storage.

Study nooks
Your rumpus area may also double as a kids’ study area or office zone. Floating shelves work well for these nooks to hold decorative boxes with stationary and office supplies. Check out the activity zones in the Arlington at Warralily Estate, Geelong and Canterbury display at Somerfield Estate Keysborough for two very different study nook ideas.

Guests’ retreat
The activity room in the Montpellier at Selandra Rise, Clyde North has been styled as a quiet TV zone perfect to use as a retreat for guests. Enjoy a Saturday night movie, or read a magazine on the large l-shaped sofa, this is area will appeal to all members of the family.
Extra beds
For those family Christmas celebrations or sleepover birthdays, it makes sense to look at furniture for your rumpus area that can be adapted into extra bedding. Large couches, fold out ottomans are a versatile option. The Sleepover Ottoman from Freedom is a great addition for rumpus areas, a comfortable and compact sofa that turns into a fold out bed complete with an inner spring mattress.

Teenage hangout
For families with teenage children the rumpus area can become a hangout for their friends to watch a movie, play computer games, tucked away from the rest of the home, but still within ear shot! Big comfy sofas and bean bags work well for this room, think lounging with lots of power points for re-charging technology!

Sound proofing
When you are next in at Spectra, speak to your consultant about sound-proofing options such as Soundstop plasterboard or Soundscreen insulation. For rumpus areas that will double as media rooms with noise sources such as voices, television sets/home theatre and musical instruments, you may wish to look at sound attenuation to minimise disruption in the rest of your home. Check out our blog on Home Theatres for more information on these options.
