Decorating and styling with mirrors…

We have been using mirrors for their practical application as well as interior décor elements for thousands of years. We’ve all got them around the house, but what can make the difference is a little thought into the placement and style of mirrored elements to create the right look for you.

Mirrors introduce light and a sense of space and depth to a room, perfect for any small or darker areas requiring visual expansion. Over-sized or full length mirror walls can appear to make room boundaries invisible and, if positioned to maximise the reflection of existing natural light, add a beautiful brightness. A large horizontal mirror on the wall above the bath in the Canterbury ensuite at Somerfield Estate, Keysborough cleverly adds a greater depth to this space whilst also creating a luxurious feel akin to a 5 star hotel.

Dining rooms are the ideal space to feature large mirrors, adding to the festive ambience of a family event or partnered with intimate lighting or candles to create a soft and romantic reflective atmosphere. According to Feng Shui principles, dining rooms are said to be a symbolic representation of a family’s wealth and the placement of a mirror in this space has the potential to magnify this energy!

Three full length mirror panels clad the dining room of the Illuka at Trillium Estate, Mickleham, resulting in a larger sense of space, reflecting not only the kitchen in the home but also the outdoors.

Aside from serving as a reflective surface, mirrors are a stunning decorative feature which can be used in place of traditional artwork pieces.

Decorative wow factor is definitely the result with the interesting feature mirror in the living room of the Montpellier display home at Selandra Rise, Clyde North. As the centrepiece for this room a lovely light and pure ambience is created to balance the striking black and neutral theme.

In another decorative use of mirrors in the Montpellier, an ornate mirror is featured in the entrance way adding a definite touch of light and elegance amongst the rich dark timber veneer wallpaper.

Creating an impressive statement in your home can be as easy as the introduction of mirrors to enhance the entry zone. As soon as you walk into the Sanctuary display home at the Somerfield Estate, Keysborough, you will be impressed with the striking mirrored feature entry wall, with two-pac battening forming a detailed pattern of geometrical shapes. Bouncing natural light forms reflections from both outside and within, creating a unique welcome and first impression of the beautiful home that awaits.

Decorative patterned charcoal tiles, laid flush with mirrors, form a spectacular entry wall with a feeling of opulence in the Sorrento at Berwick Waters, Clyde North. Light delicately reflects between the mirrored wall and off white porcelain floor tiles to create a luxurious hotel lobby feel.

The traditional placement of mirrors above fireplaces can add a timeless style to a room. The double sided fireplace feature in the Winslow at Williams Landing is perfectly complemented by a simple framed mirror which doesn’t command the centre of attention as a piece of artwork has the potential to do - resulting in the ideal balance.

Create a lovely accent to a bedroom wall with an oversized dressing mirror, both a practical and decorative effect as featured in the Winslow at Ambrosia Estate, Cranbourne West.

Another clever idea is to position a mirror facing a window looking out onto a beautifully landscaped garden or children’s play area and you instantly bring the outdoors in, your own living artwork!

The versatility of decorating with mirrors allows you to experiment with styles and effects to create the right balance of reflective light in your rooms.
